Business Web Site Success

Making Your Business Web Site Successful

How do you measure the success of your business web site?

There are many criteria for success. But, a few of the common ideas of success include:

  • Making a profit
  • Increasing morale
  • Increasing competence
  • Customer satisfaction

Making a Profit

Profit is an easy measure of success. It's as simple as asking, "Am I making more this quarter that last quarter?"

You have to consider net income as well as the variable costs of doing business. These costs include such expenses as web hosting, cost of product, pay per click and other advertising, and refunds.

What are the drivers of profits? What really matters when it come to increasing profits?

There are a number of factors in a Web-based business that drive profits. The basic factors include:

  • Get targeted visitors
  • Develop effective sales copy
  • Follow up on customer problems

Getting targeted visitors means attracting visitors who are likely to buy your products. It does not mean simply attracting visitors and making your hit counter go crazy. Visitors who do not see how your product will solve their problems will quickly go to another site.

Effective sales copy will tell the visitor the benefits of purchasing your products. These benefits should be geared to solving the visitor's problems. When the visitor sees how your product will solve the problem they are facing they will likely purchase your product.

Following up on customer problems means responding quickly when a customer calls or emails you about a problem they are having with your product. Without quick followup, your customer may request a refund.

Increasing Morale

Anxiety and stress in the workplace is a leading cause of interpersonal conflicts, absenteeism and loss of productivity.

In a small, perhaps one person, Web development business, you also need to reduce your stress. You can do this in much the same way as a larger organization. Some stress reducing tips include:

  • Work in a well lighted, clean area
  • Reduce outside interference to a minimum
  • Respect those around you and expect respect in return
  • Get plenty of exercise and good sleep
  • Have goals and work toward them
  • Reward yourself when you achieve your goals

The fact is, you will work harder and longer, and be more effective, when you like what your are doing.

Increasing Competence

Every organization should strive to increase their productivity.

A large part of increasing productivity is improving the skill levels of workers.

You should always look for opportunities to "work smarter, not harder." For a Web developer, this includes reading the SEO forums, acquiring the tools that make your work more effective, and seeking advice from experts.

We are all learning to do our jobs faster, easier, and more effectively.

Customer Satisfaction

Customers are the life blood of our marketing efforts.

Satisfying a customer may mean simply answering their questions so they will not request a refund.

Other times, customer satisfaction can result in additional purchases of add-ons or complementary products.

If can also mean reducing the likelihood of a dissatisfied customer writing derogatory comments in a newsgroup or other public forum.

Responding quickly to customer concerns is a critical factor in the success of any organization.
